Direct mail is a valuable marketing tool for business that is still very popular, despite the majority of us spending most of our time online. It is still viewed as one of the most effective marketing methods around, and is especially useful for smaller companies who don’t have multi-million pound advertising budgets. There is a defined process involved in getting a direct mail package ready, and it goes something like this. A company wants to advertise a new service to its local area and have decided to do it mostly themselves. The first thing to do is to define the offer. A direct mail marketing campaign is nothing without an offer, it’s the reason for people to contact the company. Without a reason to read, without a call to action, the campaign is a waste of time and money.

An effective direct mail marketing campaign will consider what the company provides, and what the audience needs. A good copywriter or marketer will then bring those two elements as close as possible in order for them to create a proposition that says the audience needs what the company provides. Often, there isn’t much space in which to write an advert, so the writer has to be clever in how they say things. Every word must be useful in getting the message across, otherwise it has to go.

A call to action is added to provoke a response from the reader. Classic examples are “Call now for a 50% discount!” or “Hurry, this offer is for one week only.” Something that instills a sense of urgency in the reader to make them contact you quickly. Without an effective offer, and call to action, the majority of people who read the mail piece will probably just throw it in the bin. A good direct mail piece will make things happen. It’s the purpose of it after all.

Clever wording is nothing without a good design. To be most effective, a direct mail marketing piece must be eye-catching and stand out from the crowd. The average business in the UK gets a lot of junk mail, so the design has to shout “read me!” If the piece doesn’t even get noticed, it misses the point. The design must be eye-catching without being garish, and leave enough space for the marketing copy. It should not aim to shock or only appeal to a narrow spectrum, unless that’s the target market. A good design will appeal to as many people as possible, while annoying as few as practical.

Once the material itself is done, it comes down to fulfillment. It’s much easier to use a direct mail company to send, manage and report on a mail campaign. They have the procedures, the skills and capacity to do it, and will work much quicker than someone doing it alongside their day job. It is certainly possible for the skilled businessman to design, write and fulfill their own direct mail campaign, but it’s much easier if they use the experts.

Protecting Your Property

There is a lot of discussion at the moment around digital rights, copyright and the protection of content and material. This has mainly been in the context of music and movies, but it affects the web too. The internet isn’t all about illegal downloading, iTunes or other high profile activities, it’s for all of us, and we can all become victims of copyright theft.

As a London web designer I have seen my fair share of websites, a couple of which have looked suspiciously like work I did. Clients have also mentioned to me that their sites have been copied and are now being used elsewhere on the net. When this happens, what do you do? This next couple of posts are going to discuss this further.

The first instinct when you see your work has been copied would be to fire off a hate mail telling the copied site owner that you know they have stolen your work and to take it down immediately.
Stop for a moment though, as this might not be the best course of action.

Ignorance plays a large part in the process, as many people, rightly or wrongly, regard anything on the internet as fair game. Or they believe that if there isn’t a copyright logo or statement, that it isn’t covered. While most of us know this to be incorrect, there are many who think it’s true. There is also a third option, that the site was stolen by another designer then sold on as their own work.

In many cases, the use of your work can be inadvertent, and easily rectified. Sending hate mail is a good way of making the other party get defensive, and stressing you out about a situation that could be cleared up amicably. The first thing to do is find out who owns the site and contact them through it. Make the contact clear, polite and informative, and let them know the work is protected by copyright. You should ask them to take it down, but ask them politely and don’t mention consequences if they don’t do it.

If the site owner is an innocent party, they should reply, and you can work things out between you. Starting off politely is the best way to create goodwill between you, and the other party is much more likely to listen.

If you hear nothing back from the site owner after a few days, contact the ISP and ask them to take the site down. To do this you will need evidence to demonstrate the design or content is yours, but most ISP’s take a dim view of wrongdoing on their servers and will often comply. Their main thought is to protect themselves from harm, and will often err on the side of caution by suspending the site and staying out of any legal actions that might follow.

In most cases this should be enough, and the site stays down, or is populated by different content or a different design. If it doesn’t work, there is more you can do, which we’ll discuss next time.
